How many of us have been late to work because of a flat tire? Or had that scary moment when we have to pull over to the side of the highway to try and put on the spare ourselves, or wait who knows how long for help? Dealing with flats is a pretty universal experience for drivers, but Ford automakers have teamed up with Michelin® to try and minimize these experiences, or even prevent them entirely, in the new Ford Explorer. Shelbyville drivers who want to keep rolling despite a punctured tire will be able to do so this fall when the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer arrives.
So how does it work? It works thanks to the Michelin Selfseal® tires, which have a unique system for preventing flats. The tires are lined with a rubber sealant, which can seal 90 percent of tread punctures that are a quarter-inch in diameter or less. If, for instance, a nail breaks through, the sealant surrounds it and helps close the puncture – and if the nail works its way back out, the sealant can even help with that as well. In practice, this means that air loss from your tire is slowed an incredible amount, allowing you to make it into work on time or keep your road trip on track.
The Michelin Selfseal tires come standard on the 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum and 2020 Ford Explorer Limited Hybrid trims, and are available on other trims as well. The all-new Ford Explorer is the first SUV ever to come with Michelin Selfseal tires, and automakers are excited to help drivers avoid flat tire woes.
