2023 Ford Bronco Heritage

The new Ford Bronco is a powerful and exciting new SUV that doesn’t back down from a challenge. It comes from a long and impressive line of adventure-ready vehicles and more than lives up to the legacy. Visit O’Brien Ford of Shelbyville to learn more about the history of the Ford Bronco.

Early History

The Ford Bronco was first introduced in 1965 and was designed to compete with models like the Jeep® CJ-5 and International Harvester Scout. The original models were standardized, with four-wheel drive and other features designed for heading off the beaten path.

The first vehicle had a simple configuration, but the 1966 model was offered in three formats. That year, more amenities and features were offered, which meant it was easier to pick out and design a Ford Bronco that fit its owner’s lifestyle and needs. A sport option package was introduced in 1967 and proved popular for off-road racing.

The second generation of the Ford Bronco was introduced in 1978 and was based on the chassis for the Ford F-100 pickup truck. Major redesigns would follow in 1980, 1987, and 1992 before production finally ended in 1996 to make way for the Ford Expedition.

Modern History

After years worth of popular demand, the Ford Bronco was revived in 2021. After a quarter-century hiatus, it returned with a design inspired by those classic models, retaining the boxy body design and impressive off-road capability. Despite those nods to its past, the new models offer a more comprehensive range of features and functions, giving drivers more tech and safety options than in the original model.
