Ford EV Charging Station FAQ

EV Charging StationsMaking the switch from the gas pump to an EV charging station may initially seem daunting. However, once you spend time behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang Mach-E, you quickly realize that change is a good thing. In order to ease the transition for our customers, the O’Brien Ford of Shelbyville team is taking a moment to answer some typical EV charging questions.

What is Level 1 Charging?

This is the standard way to charge your Ford F-150 Lightning at home. It is a slow charge best done over an extended period (8-12 hours) using a standard household AC outlet at 120V. This option is great for convenience, as your vehicle charges as easily as your cell phone, even using the same outlet with a proprietary connector cable. However, it is not the most efficient way to charge if you need a big battery boost in a short amount of time.

What is Level 2 Charging?

Level 2 charging is the happy medium, providing more juice in less time but preserving battery life. This option uses a 240V outlet, which can be installed in your home and can occasionally be found in public places.

What is Level 3 DC Fast Charging?

Level 3 charging, also called DC fast charging, is used on road trips or on rare occasions when the quickest charge is required. Using 480 volts of direct current, this method delivers an 80% charge in around 30 minutes. It is not recommended that you utilize DC fast charging daily, as it may shorten your overall battery life over time.

Where Can I Find a Public Fast Charger?

It’s easier than you think since Ford offers the most extensive public charging network in North America. Access the BlueOval™ charge network on your phone to find a nearby place to plug in.
